On October 15, 2024, Timo Busch and Brigitte Bernard-Rau presented their working paper, “Regulating Impact Investments: An Exploration of the Influence of the EU Taxonomy and SFDR on Impact Funds' Strategies and Impact Measurement Practices,” at the inaugural European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) Research Conference. Busch and Bernard-Rau’s research emphasizes the need for regulatory clarity and consistency in European frameworks, advocating for enhanced classification of sustainability-related investments and effective measurement guidelines to ensure impact investment vehicles meet their objectives.
The ESMA Research Conference aims to bring together academics, policymakers and industry professionals to discuss and analyse the impact of environmental risks and ESG transition on EU securities markets. A regulator and direct supervisor of financial infrastructures and service providers, ESMA integrates sustainability-related factors into its regulatory and supervisory activities.
