News from the Sustainable Finance Science Platform

To kick off the second year of the project, the members of the science platform are focusing on the EU's revised sustainable finance strategy in Policy Brief 9/2021. Their conclusion: The strategy offers promising approaches, but lacks momentum and urgency in many areas. In addition, the research network is pleased to announce a new look and the relaunch of the project website, and can now also be found on Twitter and LinkedIn.

Since August 2019, the University of Hamburg has been researching changes in the financial and real economy in collaboration with four partner institutions as part of the Sustainable Finance Science Platform. In their latest policy brief, the researchers examine the EU's revised sustainable finance strategy, published in July, and analyze its strengths and weaknesses. The researchers criticize the strategy for remaining vague and non-binding in many areas. They argue that many measures to improve the resilience of the financial sector lack momentum and urgency.

Future federal government could take on a formative role at EU level

Other important topics such as biodiversity and digital technologies are addressed, but the relevant passages lack depth of content. Here, too, it is up to the future federal government to take a leading role in further developing these issues. The policy brief identifies suitable concepts and proposals for action.

Bereits seit Ende September präsentiert sich die Wissenschaftsplattform Sustainable Finance auf einer neuen Website. Diese bietet neben einer Bibliothek aller im Projekt entstandenen Publikationen nun auch Themenseiten sowie Profile der beteiligten Wissenschaftler:innen.

Über die Wissenschaftsplattform Sustainable Finance

Die Wissenschaftsplattform Sustainable Finance (WPSF) ist ein von der Stiftung Mercator gefördertes Kooperationsprojekt fünf deutscher Forschungseinrichtungen, die zu unterschiedlichen Aspekten von Sustainable Finance forschen. Schwerpunkte liegen dabei in den Themenbereichen nachhaltige Finanzierung, Nachhaltigkeitsrisiken und -chancen sowie Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung. Als unabhängige Stimme aus der Wissenschaft wollen die Projektpartner Entscheidungsträger:innen in Politik, Finanzsektor und Realwirtschaft darin unterstützen, die zentrale Rolle der Kapitalmärkte auf dem Weg zu einer klimaneutralen Wirtschaft zu verstehen und zu gestalten.

Die beteiligten Wissenschaftler:innen unterstützen die Beantwortung zentraler gesellschaftlicher, politischer und privatwirtschaftlicher Fragestellungen, stellen etablierte und neue Erkenntnisse bereit und nehmen aktiv am politischen und öffentlichen Diskurs teil. Darüber hinaus wollen sie das Thema Sustainable Finance stärker in der deutschen Forschungslandschaft etablieren und die Verknüpfung mit internationalen Institutionen und Prozessen sicherstellen.
